What makes the artworks of sculptors Maik & Dirk Löbbert stand out is that they are not instantly recognisable as art. They are just there, remaining anonymous. Only this way can they unfold their power to become entirely one with the surrounding space. They do not alter the space to draw attention to themselves, they make no judgements and hence affirm the right of every single object to be what it is. Each space in which we encounter the sculptures is the space that has specified the conditions for their shape. These were also the circumstances for the location-specific work “Beleuchtung”, which was created in 1997 for the Sculpture Mile at the top end of Hüsingstrasse. For this piece, the artists placed, alongside an existing historical street lamp, a lamppost of the latest model from the stock of the municipality of Schwerte. A redesign of the pedestrian zone meant that it was no longer possible to keep the sculpture in its original location, so it was moved to Schwerte’s Stadtpark. The originally location-specific light sculpture was transformed into a “Memorial to a formerly location-specific sculpture.”
