Title: Fibonacci Series, 2001
Location:
Chimney of the former Lindenbrauerei Unna
On the chimney of the former Lindenbrauerei, the trademark of the Centre for International Light Art, Italian artist Mario Merz installed a sequence of neon numbers and referenced the medieval Italian mathematician and philosopher Fibonacci. The latter developed the numerical sequence for calculating spirals: 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13 , ..., – a sequence which results from the addition of the last two numbers and which, in Merz’s view, represents the visualisation of a processual ordering of natural and spiritual energy.
