Commissioned in 1901, the Lippstadt water tower supplied water to the Lippstadt population until 1977. In 1985, it was classified as an architectural monument. In 2011, the jury of the "Licht.Wasser.Turm" (Light.Water.Tower) competition decided in favor of the tower for the design by Jan-Peter E. R. Sonntag. Since 2013, the technical monument and landmark of Lippstadt, visible from afar, has housed Sonntag's monumental, endlessly rising column of light and sound.
With I ∞, the tower has become a walk-in spatial work, a place of art and technology. Since the installation of the "Columna infinita," regular guided tours of the water tower have been offered.
